There are hundreds and hundreds of free webspace providers, these are some of the ones that give you 10mb and up. Many offer less, but it is always worth having more. The only down side is the fact that you have to let them advertise on your page.
The only way of getting around this is to pay them money. If you are able to persuede your civilian committee into shelling out for a web domain for your Squadron (e.g. http://www.186squadron.co.uk) then good for you! I have not suceeded. It usually costs around �80 a year although you can find it cheaper if you hunt around.
If you are trying to get your own domain, try not to let the Civv Comm know you can get it for free and have a bit of advertising!!
This site is with FortuneCity because it offers a relativily good service and it allows fairly advanced file handling (unable to use FTP because of firewall restrictions) and enough space for what this site needs. However, if I run out of space I will have some of the site at one place and some of the site on another!
Another downside to this free space is that the web address is usually rather long. For example, the actual address for this site is http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/kingfisher/528/ but I have used a URL redirector service to mask that address and have the shorter http://www.fly.to/atcsearch in its place. Many sites offer this but I have found that the best one is come.to. Your site stays where it is but you register with the redirection service so whenever some enters the redirect URL (e.g. http://www.fly.to/atcsearch), it will access the files on the actual address (e.g. http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/kingfisher/528/) and display the page. This way the URL is short and easy to remember. I recommend it for anyone!
